ED2 Photo Assignment 1 - second photographer

The second photographer I decided to research is very well known and was named the "webs top photographer" in 2006 by Wall Street Journal. Her name is Rebekka guðleifsdóttir and she is from Iceland. Like Brendon, her photos are unusual and have a large element of fantasy to them. Rather than taking a beautiful photo of herself, she would rather create something interesting, something that makes your mind tick. - http://www.rebekkagudleifs.com/self-portraits.php?photo=self0100.jpg
Her photos are extremely weird and they make you feel uncomfortable, but thats what draws people to look at them. Most of her pictures are not very colourful and desaturated.
This photo is really fascinating because it looks like the tree/plant is growing out of her mouth.
This photograph reminded me of the one that Brendon had done with the balloons covering his face and I thought that was quite interesting that both photographers had taken a similar photograph.

I really like this photo, unlike Brendon she changes her facial expression to create tension within an image, this one in particular.

In a lot of her photos she uses her hair as a main focus of an image, here is an example of her hair being used to create effect

Rebekka now also creates and sells sweaters on her website and she also draws. Her blog can be found at http://rebekkagudleifs.com/blog/

ED2 Photo Assignment One

One of the photographers that I chose to research is Brendon Burton, an 18 year old photographer (started his 365 challenge at 17) living in Portland. He is well known for his interesting and ambitious self portraits. He uses photoshop, exposure and other techniques to create a great image. He started a flickr account so he was able to take a photo everyday for a year and he took some really amazing ones. Brendon Burtons Flickr (even more amazing self portraits) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/burtoo/ . The 365 challenge can easily be found on his tumblr; http://burtoo.tumblr.com/tagged/365
Here are some examples of his work.

I think this picture is really interesting because it makes you question how it was made. It's also a really simple background so that main object (him) in the photo really stands out.

The way that this photo has captured the letter falling around him makes it seem as though he has stopped time and that they were just placed like that, it's really interesting.

This photo caught my eye because of the barbed wire and the fire burning behind him, giving a hell-ish feel to the photo.
This photo particularly interested me because everybody has seen a slowly exposed photo using light as it became popular a couple of years ago, but i like this one because his face is directly in the middle of the lights.

The thing about Brendon Burton that i love is that in nearly every photo, no matter what is going on around him his face is always the same emotionless expression which really means you have to focus on everything else happening. Some better examples of his 'emotionless face' are here;

As his work progressed his work became more dark and adventurous, to me this shows the transition in which happened over the course of a year, for eample this photo and some others on his flickr.

He shoots his photos with A Canon 60D with a 50mm f/1.4 and a tripod, he also sometimes uses a reflector. This year Brendon plans to go to University of Oregon in the autumn, i find it amazing that he has not had much professional teaching and he acheieves these pictures.
